On Thursday, I attended a meeting held to inform City of Fort Worth retirees of proposed changes to the city pension plan. The meeting was at the East Regional Library, a site that proved to be inadequate. City staff was unprepared for the number of attendees and did not have a working sound system, enough hand-outs on the information being discussed or adequate room to seat the crowd.

Assistant City Manager Susan Alanis and Director of Human Resources Margaret Wise seemed to be amazed that so many retirees showed up at this meeting. The changes to the plan are just a budget item to them. These changes can affect retirees' lives for many years, and each retiree who chose the "ad hoc" COLA should be giving careful consideration to them.

I plan on going to the next meeting in July, and I encourage city staff to be better prepared for the turnout.
