COLLEYVILLE — Industrial Boulevard was shut down when 275 gallons of sulfuric acid spilled from a self-storage facility Wednesday afternoon.
A hazardous materials team used clay to absorb the acid and contain the spill that occurred inside Metroplex Self Storage in the 1800 block of Industrial Boulevard at 2:19 pm. Some of the chemical spilled onto the roadway and a small amount leaked into a storm drain, officials said. Officials said a damaged valve is to blame for the sulfuric acid spill, which had 93% concentration. The acid is used to treat water. The road was still closed as of 5 p.m. Officials said it would remain closed until the clean-up is complete. One man was transported to Baylor Grapevine for chemical burns on hands and feet. His condition was not known.Earlier news reports said that two office buildings near the storage facility were evacuated, however, fire department officials said those businesses just closed early.Officials said the chemical poses no threat to nearby residents.Twitter: @reporternick1
