A Fort Worth man who authorities say forced his way into a Haltom City home and assaulted a couple was shot to death during the weekend by the homeowner, Haltom City police said Tuesday.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiners office identified the man as Jerome Mitchell, 23, who was pronounced dead at the Haltom City home."Right now, it looks like it was a home invasion," said Haltom City police Cpl. Joe Hackfeld on Tuesday. "It was a robbery attempt."The 28-year-old homeowner and his 23-year-old girlfriend, who police did not identify, suffered minor injuries.No one has been arrested in the case.Hackfeld said the case would be presented to a Tarrant County grand jury.Haltom City police responded to a call about 6:15 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 5300 block of Mallory Drive.The homeowner and his girlfriend told authorities that they were in the house when a man busted down the door, walked into their home, picked up an object from inside of the home and assaulted them.At some point, the homeowner got a handgun and fired multiple times, Haltom City police said.When officers arrived, Mitchell was found dead in the home. Mitchell man died from multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiners website.There were marks on the couple as if they had been assaulted, Hackfeld said Tuesday.Authorities did not release any information on whether Mitchell had known the couple or not.Domingo Ramirez Jr., 817-390-7763; Twitter: @mingoramirezjr.
