After four years as an assistant, Steven Thomas was named boys head basketball coach at Fort Worth South Hills, replacing Brandon Ellisor, whose team was 4-21 last season.
Thomas, 28, played at UT Arlington from 2002-06 after a standout high school career at Fort Worth Dunbar, where he was first-team all-state as a senior in 2002.
State softball
Class 5A : Klein Collins scored in four of the first five innings to defeat Plano East 6-3 and reach the Class 5A state final in Austin.
The Tigers advance to the 4 p.m. championship today against Deer Park, which beat Northside O'Connor 13-2 in five innings. Deer Park scored 10 runs in the fifth.
Class 4A: Montgomery defeated 2011 state runner-up Forney 11-3 to reach today's 1 p.m. title game against Spring Branch Smithson Valley, an 11-9 winner over Waco Midway.
This is the first state tournament for Montgomery (34-6).
