The 2010 Rose Bowl-winning season was a windfall year for TCU football.

It was also a financial windfall for coach Gary Patterson, who made more than $3.4 million after the Horned Frogs finished 13-0 and beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. Patterson received more than $1 million in bonuses and incentive compensation, according to the university's most recent IRS Form 990.

A raise a week after the Rose Bowl victory bumped his base salary from $2,088,882 to around $2.7 million.

It is unclear whether Patterson has received another raise. TCU doesn't have to release contract information because it is a private institution. But as a nonprofit, its IRS Form 990 is publicly available and it lists the university's highest-paid employees. The most recently available form covers the year ending May 31, 2011.

But several sources close to TCU say Patterson is now making around $3 million a year.

Even at $2.7 million, Patterson's salary would rank fourth among Big 12 coaches, behind Texas' Mack Brown, who's the highest-paid football coach in the country with an annual salary of $5.2 million, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops (third in the nation at $4.55 million) and Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, who will earn $3.275 million this season after signing an eight-year, $30.3 million contract in March. Gundy's salary drops to $2.85 million in 2013, but increases each year until maxing out at $3.55 million in 2019.

Raises and extensions were rampant in Big 12 football the last six months as more than half the coaches saw their compensation rise and contracts extended.

Stoops was given an extension in September through 2018 and a raise that will pay him $4.55 million in 2012. By 2018, Stoops will earn $5.15 annually. According to the Houston Chronicle, Baylor's Art Briles received an extension and raise in December, which will increase his 2012 salary to about $2.5 million, up from $1.5 he was paid in 2011.

Iowa State's Paul Rhoads was given a 10-year, $20 million contract extension in December, which will pay him $1.6 million in 2012 and increase by $100,000 each year.

Patterson's current contract is guaranteed and is good through 2018.
