Arlington math teacher gets hearing before school board
ARLINGTON -- A math teacher who faces losing her job for making an insensitive remark to a Hispanic student will defend herself today in a hearing before the school board.
An independent hearing examiner has ruled that the district does not have grounds to fire Shirley Bunn, a Barnett Junior High School math teacher, who said "Go back to Mexico" in what she called a moment of frustration with a disruptive student. She has been on paid administrative leave since Sept. 30.
The board is scheduled convene at 5:30 p.m. at the central administration building, 1203 W. Pioneer Parkway, to discuss the case in closed session. Then trustees will begin a public hearing, giving Bunn and the administration each about 20 minutes to present evidence.
Larry Shaw, executive director of the United Educators Association, which is representing Bunn, said that if the board votes to fire her, he will appeal to the Texas Education Agency.
