Kennedale girls roll into regional tournament

Kennedale earned its third consecutive trip to the Class 3A girls regional tournament by defeating Bowie 80-47 Tuesday in a regional quarterfinal game at Mineral Wells High School.

Kennedale (28-6) meets Lubbock Cooper (28-6) at 7 p.m. Friday in the 3A Region I tournament at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock. Bowie ends its season 25-8. Kennedale has reached the regional tournament four of the past five seasons.

On Tuesday, junior point guard Jamaika Hughes led the Wildcats with 19 points, five rebounds and 12 steals. Kennedale led Bowie 29-6 after the first period.

"We had seen them twice, which was good, and we had film on them," Kennedale coach Vance Hughes said. "We stuck to our game plan: pressure right off the bat and try to cause chaos."

Kennedale had 37 steals on the night.

"It worked for us," Hughes added.

Sophomore guard McKinley Bostad added 16 points and nine steals. Junior forward Autumn Williams came close to a quadruple-double, recording 11 points, nine rebounds, nine steals, and seven assists.

Amarillo 59, Arlington Lamar 53: The Sandies (28-6) converted their free throws late in the game, while the Vikings (24-13) struggled in a 5A regional quarterfinal at Burkburnett High School.

The game was tied 50-all with five minutes left.

"They got a 3-pointer and we couldn't make our free throws," Lamar coach Errin Levels said. "It was a very good game. The girls worked hard."

Brooke Grant led Lamar with 18 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Janay Keys added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Boys

Arlington Bowie 38, Odessa Permian 35: The Volunteers (15-16) surprised the Panthers (23-7) in a 5A bi-district game at Tuscola Jim Ned High School.

Junior guard Jeremy Senglin led Bowie with 11 points, while junior forward Malcolm Hughes and senior post Andre Yeku added seven points each.

Bowie trailed 11-7 at halftime.

Gratts credited Hughes and Yeku for their defensive work after intermission.

Bowie meets Amarillo in the area round at 7 p.m. Friday at Vernon High School.

Arlington Martin 57, Midland Lee 46: Devonte Fields recorded 25 points and 13 rebounds -- including six offensive -- to lead the Warriors (25-7) past the Rebels at Jim Ned High School.

Tied 23-all at halftime, Fields scored 10 points in the third period and Martin built a 14-point lead.
