Grapevine Faith wins second straight TAPPS title

A

SAN ANTONIO -- Grapevine Faith Christian captured its second consecutive TAPPS Division II state championship Saturday with a 1-0 victory over El Paso Lydia Patterson at Central Catholic High School's Bob Benson '66 Stadium.

Michael Hinkley scored in the 28th minute, and goalkeeper Chapman Odom had five saves to lead the Lions in a contest played in heavy wind.

"This is the greatest feeling in the world," Hinkley said. "I just really have to thank God for pulling us through these last two games and helping us win another championship."

Hinkley's goal was set up when Dylan Ingle found Dan Hancock near the box on a free kick from around the 50-yard line.

Hancock then pushed it off to Hinkley, who was just outside the box and booted it in from 20 yards out into the right side of the goal to give the Lions (15-3-3) a 1-0 lead.

The Faith defense denied Patterson's offense a single goal, even though Patterson (8-4) had six total corner kicks compared to three for the Lions.

Patterson's defense was just as unyielding with goalkeeper Jose Saenz finishing with four saves. Both squads finished the game with six shots on goal.

"The wind was blowing really hard right in my face, especially in the second half, so I realized I needed to buckle down and tuck the ball in real tight," Odom said. "That's a great team we played. They had some great shots. My defense bailed me out a bunch of times."

Nolan rescheduled

The Fort Worth Nolan Catholic boys' Division I championship match against Plano John Paul II (13-1-4) was rescheduled for Tuesday.

The match will be played in the Metroplex at a venue and time to be determined later.

With the exception of the DIII boys and girls championships, all four remaining final matches had been scheduled for play Saturday at the Blossom Athletic Center.

TAPPS officials, however, said those fields were underwater due to inclement weather.

All championships were then moved to Bob Benson '66 Stadium, which has FieldTurf, and game times were adjusted accordingly.

Due to time constraints, TAPPS officials said only five games could be played, leaving the Nolan boys (17-2-2) as the odd men out.

Covenant splits

Freshman Allysa Karr scored a second-half goal to tie the game 2-2 and the game-winning shootout goal to lift the Colleyville Covenant girls to a 3-2 shootout victory over Carrollton Prince of Peace for their second straight Division III title.

The Colleyville Covenant boys (13-3-1) were unable to recover from a 4-0 halftime deficit as Carrollton Prince of Peace rolled to a 6-0 victory for their third consecutive D-III championship.
