MANSFIELD -- Arlington Seguin never bowed their heads despite a huge early deficit, didn't give in after relinquishing their hard-fought lead in the fourth quarter and upset Aledo, the No. 10-ranked Class 4A girls basketball team in Texas.
Sophomore point guard Aundra Stovall scored eight straight points in the final three minutes to lead the Lady Cougars to a 49-44 victory Friday night in their Class 4A Region I area-round playoff game at Mansfield High School. Stovall finished with a team-high 15 points and made two big free throws in the final seconds after missing four in a row earlier in the period to seal the victory.
"In the fourth quarter I had to work hard for my team," Stovall said. "I knew that they needed me as a point guard with a sound mind to be ready. I just had to really use my all and get those points that we needed."
Aledo jumped out to a 16-4 lead six minutes into the game, but Seguin (26-10) closed out the first quarter on a 5-0 run. The Lady Cougars used the momentum to outscore Aledo 23-10 in the second and took a 32-26 advantage into the half.
Seguin built its lead to 13 in the opening minutes of the second half, but Aledo chipped away at it behind junior Mallory Powell (20 points) and senior Alanna Martin (13 points).
The Lady Bearcats (29-5) took their first lead since the second quarter on a three-point play by Powell four minutes into the fourth quarter, but were outscored 9-1 in the final three minutes by Seguin.
Alarie Mayze got things going offensively for the Cougars, scoring 10 of her 14 points in the first half. Dwanisha Tate chipped in with a stat-stuffing performance of nine points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
"We got a little riled up in that first quarter and didn't have a good start," Seguin coach Courtney Phillips said. "But we battled hard, stepped up and played tough. Aledo's a good team and deserves a lot of credit, but tonight we got it done."
