ARLINGTON -- Shawn Estrada knocked the rust off after a long layoff and painted Terrance Wood with the look of a bad hangover -- puffy eyes and all -- on Friday night.
Estrada, a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, stayed undefeated in his professional career (13-0) after a unanimous decision over Wood in an eight-round light heavyweight bout at UT Arlington's College Park Center.Estrada's first bout in six months was also the featured undercard match on ESPN's Friday Night Fights."I got some rounds in," said Estrada, who has sat out since August recuperating from knee surgery. "I've never been eight rounds in my professional career, but I felt good and confident."I couldn't ask for more. I didn't get hit that much."Wood, who at 177 pounds came in 19 pounds lighter than Estrada, did get hit. He was the consistent recipient of Estrada's "manos de oro," or hands of gold, from start to finish.A succession of sharp right hands to the head had Wood wobbly in the second, again in the fifth and in the seventh.Wood, though, literally shook off the assaults, shaking his head in what appeared to be defiance."He was saying, like, 'Woo. That was a good one,'" Estrada said. "I hurt him a couple of times."He has a tough head. He wouldn't go down."The quicker Wood (8-2-1), of Bay City, was able to maneuver out of bad spots in the corner on more than a few occasions.The judges ultimately ruled in favor of Estrada, 78-74, 80-72, 80-72.Estrada's camp said the fighter is planning a return to the ring in May."I didn't get tired," said Estrada, who hasn't fought since beating Alvaro Enriquez in August. "Every round I landed shots; I was very aggressive."That's what I wanted. It's a learning experience."Yanez victoriousFormer Olympian and Dallas native Luis Yanez (6-0-1) returned to the ring after a yearlong layoff to win with a consistent jab and bruising body blows to Jamal Parram (5-4) in a unanimous decision in a six-round bantamweight fight.A broken knuckle kept Yanez and his catlike-quick hands on the shelf for almost all of 2011, but a hard left hook to the body sent Parram to the canvas in the sixth round.Main eventMike Dallas Jr. withstood a cut over his right eye to record the 18th victory of his pro career with a unanimous decision over southpaw Mike Gonzalez in a spirited 10-round light welterweight bout.Dallas, a Bakersfield, Calif., native, is 18-2-1. Gonzalez of Cleveland, Ohio, had won 15 consecutive matches before falling to 20-3.Fort Worth vs. DallasIn a battle of east and west, Jose Rodriguez of Dallas won a unanimous decision against Fort Worth's Alex Lopez in a four-round junior lightweight slugfest.Rodriguez (3-0) found the right side of Lopez's head an open target, landing left hook after left hook.Lopez (2-3) was knocked down in the second round.Other results
