West injured as Mavs enjoy romp past Nuggets

DALLAS -- On a night when the Dallas Mavericks had one of their largest blowout victories of the season, they also found themselves once again discussing key injuries.

Before Wednesday's 102-84 triumph over the Denver Nuggets, the Mavs found out that guard Jason Terry wouldn't play because of a mild strain to a quadriceps muscle. Guard Rodrigue Beaubois also sat out after the death of his father.

Then, before the Mavs were halfway into pounding the Nuggets into submission, they lost guard Delonte West for an extended period of time with a combination of a fractured and dislocated right ring finger.

Despite the injuries, the Mavs were resourceful in building a 31-point lead in stretching their winning streak to five games in a row.

"We obviously have some upheaval right now with the roster and guys with injuries and personal situations," coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's a bit of a scramble, but we've got a good scramble team, and we're going to have to just piece it together here."

The Mavs (19-11) only led 51-39 at the half, but used a blistering 27-6 run to assume an 83-52 lead late in the third quarter. Dallas scored 32 points in the third quarter and held Denver to just 15 points in the third period -- its lowest scoring quarter of the season.

"We had a very good third quarter," Carlisle said. "The third quarter was key, because they'd gone on a 4-0 run to end the half and had a little momentum.

"The third quarter had been challenging for us."

The Nuggets were without starters Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and Nene, which probably contributed to them shooting a season-low 35.7 percent from the field.

"Right now our efficiency on offense really helps our defense," Carlisle said. "It's going to be even more pronounced when we get on the road."

The Mavs closed their homestand with a 3-0 record and start a two-game road trip Friday in Philadelphia. But before matching up with the Sixers, the Mavs wanted to make sure there were no slipups against the Nuggets.

Shawn Marion led a parade of six Mavs in double-figure scoring with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, Vince Carter tallied 15 points, Lamar Odom had 14 and Jason Kidd added 13.

Marion was especially praised by Carlisle for holding Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson to just three points on 1-of-8 shooting.

"I'm just doing what I do every game," Marion said. "Y'all are just not paying attention to me.

"I'm just playing my game and I pride myself into being the best basketball player I can. Not position-wise, but as a player as whole."

The Mavs were so "whole'' against the Nuggets that Dirk Nowitzki played just 25 minutes and finished with 12 points. It was a night when Brandan Wright got 10 points and seven boards, and the American Airlines Center crowd saw their favorite team cruise to one of its rare blowout victories of the season.

West injured himself when reaching in on a play about 25 feet from the basket. The Mavs are unsure when he or Beaubois will return, and added that Terry will be sidelined at least the game against the 76ers.

In the meantime, Carlisle will have to shuffle his backcourt in the wake of the latest injuries.

"We'll have to make it work," Carlisle said. "With Kidd we're going to have to keep his minutes reasonable, and Dominique Jones is going to have to play some.

"We may have to be creative in some our rotations. We may have some bigger guys playing the [shooting guard] spot at times.''
