Granbury, Summit and Seguin girls open playoffs with wins

Clinging to a two-point halftime lead, Granbury changed tactics and romped to a 52-32 victory against Waco in a Class 4A bi-district game Tuesday at Hill College in Hillsboro.
Junior post Lilley VanderZee led the Pirates (27-8) with 26 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots. Granbury also got 14 points -- including four 3-pointers -- from junior guard Ashley Bonugli. She also added 10 rebounds.
Up 24-22 at intermission, Granbury switched to a zone defense with man-to-man coverage on the player with the ball.
"They were penetrating, pulling up to shoot jumpers and scoring," Granbury coach Leta Andrews said.
"We adjusted our defense and it certainly paid off. It broke down their rhythm."
Granbury meets Fort Worth Western Hills in the area round at 6 p.m. Friday at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.
Mansfield Summit 55, Waco Midway 29: Shayna Jackson and Ashley Eli each scored 10 points to lead the Jaguars (31-3) past the Panthers in playoff action at Corsicana High School.
Summit opened the game with an 11-2 run, and led by as much as 26 in the second half -- including the final score. Jackson also had four steals, while Eli added nine rebounds and three assists. Sophomore post Destiny Strange led Summit with 10 rebounds, and scored four points.
Summit meets Fort Worth Trimble Tech at Richland High School on Friday, with the time to be determined.
Arlington Seguin 55, Killeen 41: Dwanisha Tate scored 18 points to lead the Cougars (25-10) past the Kangaroos (19-14) in a 4A bi-district game at Hamilton High School.
The game was tied 25-all at halftime, but Seguin outscored Killeen 14-7 in the third period.
