Southwest Airlines said its passenger traffic in January dropped 2.7 percent when compared to January 2011 as the Dallas-based carrier decreased its capacity by 0.7 percent.

Its load factor for January declined 1.5 percentage points to 74.3 percent for January 2012.

The carrier said it estimates that passenger revenue per available seat mile increased about 7 percent compared to the same figure in January 2011.

Its operating results include its subsidiary AirTran Airways, which it purchased in May 2011.
