A motorist has been sentenced to 13½ years in prison for driving through a red light while he was drunk and killing a Euless driver in 2011.

Miguel Moreno, 36, was sentenced to 162 months on Jan. 13 in Criminal District Court No. 371.

As part of his plea agreement, a 2009 burglary charge out of Haltom City was dismissed against Moreno, Tarrant County criminal court documents state.

Border Patrol agents also have a hold on Moreno once he's released from prison, Tarrant County Sheriff Department jail records show.

Moreno was arrested shortly after the wreck on Jan. 1, 2011, at Hurst Boulevard and Precinct Line Road in Hurst. Brook Johnson, 23, died in February 2011 from injuries he suffered in the wreck.

The wreck occurred about 1 a.m. as Johnson, who was driving a 2002 Ford Mustang, was northbound on Precinct Line Road when a 1999 Tacoma driven by Moreno ran the red light and hit the Mustang in the intersection.

Johnson and a 21-year-old passenger were taken to local hospitals. The Euless motorist died a few weeks later while Johnson’s passenger survived, Hurst police said.

Moreno was not seriously injured.

Moreno has a criminal history in Tarrant County. He had arrests for failing to identify himself, unlawful restraint and assault with bodily injury of a family member from 2004 to 2005, according to court documents.

On Dec. 24, 2005, Haltom City police arrested Moreno for his first driving-while-intoxicated charge. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail on March 2006.
