With just a handful of games remaining in the regular season, the men's basketball teams are positioning themselves for a shot at the playoffs. Three teams came away with wins and a rivalry continued to burn Friday night.

Friday

Legacy 45, Timberview 40: There's a reason basketball is played for four quarters.

Despite an impressive effort through the first three quarters, it was the critical fourth that made the difference Friday night for Timberview as it lost to cross-town rival Legacy 45-40 at Timberview High School in District 5-5A.

Leading 36-32 entering the final quarter, Timberview (14-11, 4-3) appeared to have the game in hand. McWisdom Badejo's turnaround jumper gave the Wolves a 38-36 lead early in the quarter, but it would be the last time Timberview would have the lead.

Legacy (8-15, 3-4) turned on the defense and held Timberview scoreless for the next six minutes, going on a 5-0 run that would put the Broncos in the lead at 41-38.

Jacob Van's free throws for Timberview made it a one-point game, but Marchie Murdock Jr.'s fast-break layup with 18 seconds left bumped the Legacy lead back up to 43-40.

Timberview missed its chance at a tie as Van's 3-point attempt rimmed out.

"We got some really fortuitous bounces tonight. We have been close in so many games against top teams, and tonight the kids closed it out to get a big win," Legacy coach Marchie Murdock said. "It was a good win."

Early in the second quarter, it looked as though the Wolves were going to pull away. Brandon Pye had seven of his 17 points in the quarter, including a 3-pointer at the midway point to give Timberview a 20-12 lead.

"We didn't shoot the ball well at all. When you do that, you have got to attack the rim and draw contact, or get good looks at shots from 10 feet in," Timberview coach Duane Gregory said.

Mansfield 52, Midlothian 39: The Mansfield Tigers captured their second District 5-5A win, rolling over Midlothian on the road and improving to 10-13 overall with a 2-4 district record.

Zach Miller led the way for Mansfield with 19 points and teammate Tyler Hendricks scored 10 points in the win.

Summit 51, Granbury 43: The Jags went on the road and earned the tough District 7-4A win, improving to 15-5 overall with a 5-2 district record.

Avery Schwab led Summit with 11 points and teammate Joel Kapiamba put in 10 points for the road win.

Seguin 62, Summit 57: Turnovers and missed chances at the free-throw line stopped Summit just short of an upset win at home.

Seguin, ranked in the top 10 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, needed some lucky breaks to get past the Jaguars, pulling away in the final minutes thanks to free throws.

Summit appeared to be in bad shape from the start, getting down 19-12 after a quarter of play and staying behind, at one point by 12 points, before getting its act together in the third quarter.

The Jaguars trailed 36-30 at the half, but roared back in the third quarter, taking a 49-45 lead into the final quarter.

But turnovers caught up to Summit, who lost Joel Kapiamba for the game with about three minutes left when he fouled out.

"I think we had some unkindly turnovers that led to Joel being put in a bad situation where he had to foul them to keep them from scoring. Our inability to take care of the basketball there for that two or two and a half minute stretch no doubt was the reason we lost that basketball game," said Summit coach Jason Mutterer.

Kapiamba led all scorers with 22 points. Teammate Darius Tabron had 12 points in the loss.

Duncanville 47, Legacy 34: The Broncos couldn't hang against Duncanville at home, dropping the District 5-5A game.

Nick Thomas led Legacy with 10 points in the loss.

Timberview 76, Midlothian 44: The Wolves got out to a 27-9 lead after a quarter of play in the road game, then worked for the double-digit win in District 5-5A play.

Brandon Pye had 15 points and Jaylan Barnes had 12 points in the win.
