Grapevine-Colleyville hockey team upsets Southlake

Grapevine/Colleyville Silver scored three first-period goals and held on for a 6-4 victory over co-South Division leader Southlake on Thursday in the AT&T Metroplex Hockey League. It was only the second loss of the season for Southlake.

Blake Gober, Ryan Machos and Trey McMillian helped stake Grapevine/Colleyville to the early 3-0 lead. Gober scored the team's fourth goal in the second period, but Southlake scored twice in the second and twice more in the third to tie the game at 4-4 at the 4:02 mark of the final period.

Grapevine/Colleyville (9-7) clinched the victory with two late goals -- McMillian's second and Gober's third -- and remained in fourth place in the division. Machos finished with three assists, and Gober had two.

Jeffrey Rucci scored two goals for Southlake (12-2), which dropped into second place in the South. Connor Morrow and Aaron Driggs contributed one goal and one assist each, and Preston Zenuk added a pair of assists.

Carroll swimmers win Battle of 1709

Carroll won all six relays and 15 of 18 individual races to dominate the first Battle of 1709 swimming competition Thursday. The Dragons outscored the combined Keller ISD boys teams 209-103 and posted a 214-100 victory on the girls side.

John Remetta established two high school pool records in the home meet, winning the 100 breaststroke in a time of 59.69 seconds and also leading the 200 medley relay team to a winning time of 1:37.03. Joining him on the team were Jonathan Roberts, Curtis Goss and Ryan Walker.

The Dragons will host the District 6-5A Championships at the Carroll Aquatics Center on Jan. 27-28.

Covenant soccer rolls to 6-0 district mark

Colleyville Covenant Christian posted back-to-back shutouts last week, pushing its inaugural season record to 6-0 in district play and 12-4-2 overall. Goalkeeper Garrett Krebs now has four shutouts in the past five games.

In Thursday's 7-0 win over Irving Highlands, the Cougars scored four goals in four minutes -- including two by Caleb O'Dell -- late in the second half to break the game open. Jacob Garcia and Lee Mills also scored goals during the surge, and Matthew Schwebke and Brooks Friedman added a goal and two assists each.

In Monday's 7-0 victory over Tyler Bullard Brook Hill, O'Dell led the way with three goals and an assist. Jacob Garcia, Jonathan Hudson, Friedman and Schwebke added one goal each. Garcia also scored three goals in a 9-2 win over Irving Highlands on Jan. 12.

Stallard earns academic honor

Allison Stallard, a former Colleyville Covenant Christian soccer standout who is now a junior at Middle Tennessee, has been selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's University Scholar All-South second team.

The first-team All-Sun Belt Conference defender started all 20 games for the Blue Raiders this season and was the team's third-leading scorer. She was joined on the academic squad by teammate Paige Goeglein, a third-team selection.
