KELLER -- Parents can learn what they can do at home to help their kids do well in school at the Keller school district's Title I Family University from 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 28 at Caprock Elementary School.

The event is especially for families with children at one of the district's six Title I campuses but is open to other district parents as well. Title I campuses have at least 40 percent of their students eligible for free or reduced cost lunches and receive additional federal funds. Keller's Title I schools are: Caprock, North Riverside Elementary, Parkview Elementary, Whitley Road Elementary, Chisholm Trail Intermediate and Fossil Hill Middle School.

"The reason the Title I Family University came about is that Keller ISD is trying to meet the needs of Title I families in a unique way," said Monica Santiago, Title I Family Involvement Specialist.

To maintain Title I funding, schools must hold parent involvement activities. District officials surveyed parents on the six campuses to find out which topics interested them most, Santiago said.

The event will feature classes on how parents can help their children perform better in school, effective family communication and nutrition. Classes will be offered in English and Spanish. A community resource fair will be held on site where families can visit with local service providers such as Community Storehouse, Cook Children's and Workforce Solutions.

Free transportation to Caprock from other Title I campuses will be available, as well as child care and food.
