Colleyville Heritage boys outlast Grapevine

A

GRAPEVINE -- The demeanors, physicality and relentless dueling student sections said it all -- Colleyville Heritage and Grapevine just don't like one another.

The rivals did battle for the second time this season on Friday night, and it was the Panthers who were able to tame the high emotion at Grapevine High School, prevailing 59-46 to complete the season sweep of the Mustangs and stay tied with Richland atop District 6-5A.

After grabbing a 12-4 lead after the first quarter, the Panthers (18-5, 9-1 in 6-5A) used a 20-5 run at the end of the first half through the middle of the third to pull away.

"We kind of had to get our second wind there for a second. I thought we did a good job keeping our heads down the stretch and keeping poised," said Heritage senior guard Nash Nelson, who posted 12 points, six assists and four steals in the win.

"I'm not going to lie, it's not friendly out there and there's some bad blood," Nelson said.

Heritage senior post Thomas Brandsma paced the Panthers with 20 points and added five rebounds.

Marcus Dempsey, who led the Mustangs with 23 points, did his best to keep Grapevine in it by going 6 of 8 on 3-pointers, four of which came in the second half.

Grapevine managed a run of its own midway through the third, outscoring Heritage 10-2 to cut the lead to single digits late in the quarter.

But the Panthers were able to control the clock and get to the free-throw line in the fourth, although they went 10 of 24 from the line in the final period.

The Mustangs have dropped four of their past five games, moving to 16-11 and 5-5 in district with the loss.

Heritage managed to keep Grapevine senior post Jared Lowe in check, allowing the 6-foot-9 post just 10 points to go with six rebounds and two blocks.

"We really rely on our defense," Heritage coach Stephen Hamrick said. "And we didn't give up any easy baskets and we take pride in that."
