Meals on Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County has an "urgent" need for new volunteers to deliver meals in east and southeast Fort Worth, the non-profit organization announced Friday morning.

Neighborhoods with the greatest need for service include Woodhaven, Handley and Polytechnic in Fort Worth, as well as parts of Forest Hill.

Meals on Wheels often must start new routes in these areas because they have a high number of older residents, said Denise Harris in a news release. Also, several current volunteer drivers can no longer make deliveries because of health reasons.

Some volunteers drive a regular route one day a week, according to the organization. They pick up meals between10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and one route usually involves less than 10 stops all in the vicinity of the pick-up location.

Volunteers must have their own transportation and pass a criminal background check.

To volunteer, call Director of Volunteers Nedra Cutler at 817-258-6426 or visit mealsonwheels.org.
