What stands out about most Texas water towers -- those tall chroniclers of varsity triumphs gone by -- is how bland and uninspiring they are.
Arguably, this is a good thing. In Luling, near San Antonio, the city painted its tower up like a gigantic (and somewhat hideous) watermelon in honor of the annual watermelon-thumping fest. Over in Mathis, north of Corpus Christi, the city went with a half-blind pirate, dagger gritted in teeth, to convey the virtues of its potable water. Now, Haltom City is holding a contest, asking the public to design the paint job for the water tower at Haltom Road and Northeast Loop 820.The art itself must be original and be submitted electronically no later than noon Jan. 27. To enter the contest and read the rules, visit www.haltomcitytx.com."Whoever wins is just going to get recognition of having a great idea or coming up with a nice piece of art," said Fran Burns, community projects coordinator.Translation: no money. This prize is purely for the ego: May the winner flush with pride.Darren Barbee, 817-390-7126Twitter: @DarrenBarbeeHave more to add? News tip? Tell us
