Read it: 'Over and Under the Snow' by Kate Messner
Over and Under the Snow
By Kate Messner; illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal
Chronicle Books, $16.99
Best for: Ages 4-8
What it's about: A little girl and her father go cross-country skiing through the snow-covered forest. Meanwhile, below the snow, an unseen world of animals is hibernating, hiding and hunting. The book concludes with the author's notes, facts about the animals in the story and a list of resources for further reading on animals in winter.
Why read it: This fun winter story makes a great read-aloud before snuggling under the covers at bedtime. The beautiful mixed-media artwork brings each animal to life. Children will love learning about what the animals of the forest do during winter, and adults may learn a thing or two as well.
