As part of DFW Connector project, 2 bridges over Texas 114 to go one-way
Bridges across Texas 114 that connect Southlake and Grapevine will become one-way next week, potentially creating more confusion for white-knuckled commuters who must navigate the DFW Connector project.
The bridge from Grapevine's Northwest Highway to Southlake's Gateway Drive will go west, and the bridge from Southlake Boulevard to Grapevine's Wall Street will go east, officials said.
The one-way bridges -- both will have three lanes -- will be in effect for months, said Marc Rothwell, intersection manager for NorthGate Constructors, the contractor on the connector project.
The change is in preparation for the construction of a single eight-lane bridge as part of the $1.02 billion project to widen Texas 114 and Texas 121 in the Southlake and Grapevine areas. The bridge is expected to be completed in spring 2013.
Southlake Mayor John Terrell, citing the congestion in the area, said the switch to one-way may benefit nearby businesses.
"I drive through that fairly regularly," Terrell said. "It is a constant pain getting through."
Terrell praised NorthGate for delaying the switch-over until after the holidays and for working with the city and businesses "to reduce any negative impact" and to help inform the public.
But he acknowledged that some drivers won't get the message.
"We want to make sure people have clear evidence on how to get through," Terrell said, adding that there have been discussions about having police officers on hand for the first few days.
The change in the traffic pattern will occur over four nights starting Tuesday, NorthGate spokeswoman Kristen Schropp said. NorthGate crews are expected to put up notice signs this week.
"It will be a definite change for people," Schropp said. She urged drivers to take their time to learn the new pattern.
When the new bridge is completed, the two old ones will be demolished, Schropp said. The new bridge will provide a direct connection from Southlake Boulevard to Grapevine's Northwest Highway.
