Please, Jerry, either sell the team or fire the general manager or just go away so the Cowboys can be a proud franchise again. Please!

Seasonal greeting

I'm a Jew, and right here and now, I'd like to wish every Christian reading this a Merry Christmas.

Why wouldn't I? I don't celebrate Christmas, but that doesn't mean I don't want others to. And I certainly don't want to prevent anyone else from using those words.

I don't think there's a "war on Christmas." I think that some retailers, out of a totally unnecessary excess of politeness, decided that someone might be offended by Merry Christmas -- but that's nonsense.

I don't take offense at being wished a Merry Christmas and I don't know anyone who does -- Jew, Muslim, atheist, Buddhist or whatever.

It's a friendly greeting and all of us in the above categories are quite used to being in the minority, thanks.

I did find it offensive, exactly one time; a lady noticed my Star of David, looked me right in the eye, sneered, and in a very hostile tone, said "Merry CHRISTMAS!"

I smiled and said, "Merry Christmas to you, too, and a Happy New Year!" Her expression of shock was priceless. But that only happened once.

I don't think Christmas is about picking fights. If you do ... well, Merry Christmas anyway.

College sports

A decade or so ago, excitement for college football in Dallas-Fort Worth came mostly from being a fan of a college team from somewhere else.

Today, there are plenty of reasons to be proud of the teams playing Division I sports here at home.

I congratulate TCU and SMU on their remarkable success in advancing to major conference affiliations, which means providing top-quality football for student-athletes and fans in our region.

University of North Texas football also is advancing. With our new Apogee Stadium and a proven coaching staff, we've made significant progress this year, and all signs point to a great future.

All three universities are competing strongly in other sports, too. Men's basketball comes to mind, especially at UNT, where five straight seasons with more than 20 wins have resulted in two trips to the NCAA tournament. But there are great athletes competing in almost every sport at DFW's three Division I universities.

For all of us, maintaining the quality of our academic programs is the most important goal. Yet offering strong, visible athletic programs is part of university success. And, it's fun for everyone.

Liberal media

It is spectacularly transparent of this country's liberal media (including the Star-Telegram) how they follow the playbook concerning the dissection of every Republican primary candidate as soon as they gain the top spot in the polls.

Mitt Romney, however, seems to get a pass. I assume that is because he is the most like Obama and would be a suitable substitute should the Republican actually win in 2012. That would be a good way to keep the status quo of this faltering economy and all the spending that is bankrupting this once-great country of ours.

If only the media could, with the same killerlike mindset, research some of the Democrats and point out all their shortcomings, the same as for the Republicans and Tea Party candidates.

But where would be the fun in that for you?

Campaign contract

What we need is a law that says elected officials are legally bound by their campaign promises, and if they break them, they can be sued for breach of contract. If they are found guilty, they would be immediately removed from office and never eligible to run for elected office again. I don't want to be "governed," I want to be "represented," but how can I vote for the right candidate if they are all allowed to lie with impunity during the election and then do whatever they want to once they're elected?
