FORT WORTH -- A 46-year-old man fatally shot his estranged girlfriend and wounded her mother Monday in the parking lot of an east Fort Worth apartment complex, police reported.

The man, Eugene Esters, had lived with Jennifer Johnson, 33, at La Plaza apartment complex off Woodhaven Boulevard but had been told to move out, according to the report.

On Sunday night, Esters slept in his car because he wanted to see his 21/2-year-old daughter on Monday, homicide detectives believe. Shortly after 3 p.m. Monday, Esters and Johnson argued and he shot her several times, the report says.

Johnson was pronounced dead at John Peter Smith Hospital at 3:50 p.m., according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

Johnson's mother, Della Johnson, 53, had come to the complex to help jump-start her daughter's car. She was also shot by Esters and is expected to survive, police said.

The couple's daughter and Jennifer Johnson's older child were not at the complex during the shooting.

Esters was in the Mansfield Jail on Tuesday night with bail set at $750,000. He faces charges of murder and attempted murder.

Tarrant County court records say that Johnson successfully sued Esters in 2009 for child support.
