Rangers must fill Narron's duties

The Rangers and Josh Hamilton are sorting through their options as they look to replace the coach who first came to the club as part of Hamilton's support system.

Johnny Narron was hired Monday by Milwaukee as hitting coach. He spent 2011 as the Rangers' assistant hitting coach after being a special assignments coach since the Rangers traded for Hamilton in December 2007.

Narron and Hamilton were paired together before the 2007 season, when Hamilton debuted in the major leagues with Cincinnati after battling addictions to drugs and alcohol.

General manager Jon Daniels and Hamilton are in the process of determining how to ensure that Hamilton will have the support he needs in 2012.

"We're confident we will continue to support Josh and all of our players as needed," Daniels said. "We had some discussion about this, but will be in better position to address that specifically once we've all put our heads together."

The Brewers sought permission to interview Narron last week. Mike Napoli gave Narron much of the credit for helping him improve from a low point of .183 on May 27 to post career-highs in average (.320), homers (30) and RBIs (75).

"Johnny is very talented and has helped me tremendously, both personally and professionally," said Hamilton, who has been running for a week without any pain after having surgery for a sports hernia earlier this month.

"He is fulfilling a dream to be a major-league batting coach, and I have told him previously I would never stand in his way from doing that."

Wilson in Miami

C.J. Wilson is hoping to decide during the winter meetings where he will play for the next several seasons, and the Rangers remain in the hunt for the free-agent left-hander.

Wilson visited the Miami Marlins on Monday and will meet with another team this week, said agent Bob Garber. No meeting has been scheduled with the Rangers.

The other known team courting Wilson is Anaheim, which played host to him last week. Garber met with several teams, including the New York Yankees and Philadelphia, during the general managers meetings two weeks ago in Milwaukee.

The Rangers have a rotation for 2012 if Wilson doesn't re-sign. Neftali Feliz became a starter last week as the Rangers signed free-agent closer Joe Nathan.

Briefly

The Rangers handed out full playoff shares worth $251,515.76 each to 47 players, coaches and other club personnel. Those who have received a full share the past two years have collected just short of $500,000.

Bruce Greene, a renowned Western artist and sculptor, has been commissioned by the Rangers to design the statue of Shannon Stone, the fan who fell from the left-field stands July 7 and later died, and his son, Cooper. The statue will be named Rangers Fans.
