BURLESON -- Mansfield Summit saw plenty of film on Aledo's Johnathan Gray, heard all the tall tales of his running prowess and read all about the stats.

Add it all up and it wasn't enough on Friday night, as Gray and the Bearcats stomped Summit 59-23 at Burleson Stadium behind his 321-yard, five-touchdown performance.

Thanks to his 300-plus yard effort, Gray has rushed for more than 10,000 yards for his high school career.

Aledo (10-2) will play the winner of Canyon Randall and El Paso Riverside in the regional semifinal round of the 4A state playoffs.

The Bearcats scored on every possession in the first half, and Gray didn't waste any time on his first carry. Gray rumbled for a 17-yard gain after starting at midfield.

Gray needed only three more plays to take the game's first lead at 7-0, running for a 27-yard touchdown.

The Bearcats forced Summit (10-2) into a three-and-out on its next possession, then took a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter following a Chance Nevarez 32-yard field goal.

Summit showed some resilience on its next possession, driving 84 yards in 11 plays and cutting the deficit to 10-8. Summit scored on a Calvin Burns 1-yard run, his first of the night.

Aledo extended its lead on the ensuing possession, scoring on a Willie Gibson 27-yard touchdown reception on fourth-and-long. Matthew Bishop's throw was to the back of the end zone, and after a juggle, Gibson brought it in for the 17-8 lead.

Summit would score again early in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 17-15. Burns scored on a 12-yard run.

Aledo would score three unanswered touchdowns to close out the half, leading 38-15.

Gray scored all three of the touchdowns on runs of 34, 30 and 4 yards.

Summit's lone touchdown of the second half came late in the third quarter. Backup quarterback Antonio Bennett scored on an 11-yard run to cut the Aledo lead to 45-23.

Earlier on Friday, it was announced that Gray was one of five finalists for the Landry Award, the award given to the top player in the Metroplex.
