DFW AIRPORT -- Holiday travelers passing through Dallas/Fort Worth Airport will find technology "gifts" spread throughout its terminals, airport officials said Monday.

DFW has stationed large boxes bearing Microsoft Tag codes around the airport. When the code is scanned with a mobile phone, it provides access to coupons and discounts at airport restaurants and retailers.

"When you check in, it's not going to offer you something two terminals away. It's going to offer you something right in your neighborhood," airport spokesman David Magaña said, showing off the new Tag app on a smartphone Monday. "We can help the passenger locate some of those services they may not be familiar with."

The airport launched a coupon/discount program with Foursquare and Facebook Places in August. Since then, more than 7,000 passengers have used coupons accessed through Foursquare check-ins.

Magaña said the airport has also installed 11 interactive maps in the terminals to help passengers find nearby services. Using the touch screen, passengers can choose a category such as restaurants or airlines and get locations and descriptions.

The airport also announced that it has opened 1,000 covered spaces in the Express North parking lot, to ease congestion after the Terminal A garage was partially closed for the terminal redevelopment program that began in May.

And to assist holiday travelers, the airport will have baggage staff roaming through parking garages to help travelers carry luggage into the terminals, Magaña said.
