KELLER -- Southlake Carroll survived a stiff District 7-5A challenge from Keller Central on Thursday, outlasting the Chargers 24-21.

Carroll (8-0, 5-0) relied mostly on the running game as the Dragons could not seem to sustain any momentum through the air. Carroll quarterback Kenny Hill would finish the game 6-for-15 passing for 88 yards with two interceptions.

The Dragons looked to have the game in hand when Hill rushed 37 yards off the right side of the line for a touchdown to put Carroll up 24-14 with 2:26 left. The touchdown capped a nine-play drive that last just more than four minutes and followed a missed 32-yard field goal by Central that would have tied the score.

The missed field goal was far from the only missed opportunity for Central (6-2, 3-2). It made four separate trips to the red zone but come away with nothing -- twice turning the ball over on downs, a turnover on an interception, and the missed field goal.

The Carroll touchdown did serve to awaken Central quarterback Tanner Tausch, who marched the team down the field, needing just 74 seconds to go 70 yards to score and bring Central back within three.

Central got three stops to force a punt from the Dragons with just seconds left, but an untimely running into the kicker penalty all but ended the game for the Chargers.

The Chargers could not have been the threat they were without Zach Sanchez, who came back from a two-reception outing last week to grab six balls, along with a rushing touchdown. He took part in all three Central touchdowns, catching two and running in a third. He also contributed a spectacular diving interception that set up one of the unfulfilled trips to the red zone.

All three Southlake Carroll turnovers led to empty red-zone trips for the Chargers.

Steven Bergmark continued his solid sophomore campaign, rushing for 77 yards on 14 carries. Hill carried 15 times for 60 yards, and took part in all three Dragons touchdowns.
