MANSFIELD -- Mansfield Timberview assistant football coach Cody McCarty died Sunday at Huguley Memorial Medical Center in Burleson.

McCarty, 29, died of an apparent heart attack, Mansfield school district spokesperson Richie Escovedo said.

He had been the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Wolves since 2009 and also was an assistant baseball coach and taught physical education.

"This is a big loss, and not just for football or baseball. He let every kid in his classes know that they were special," Timberview head football coach Mark Walker said. "He was a good man that did everything right."

Walker broke the news to members of the football and baseball teams, as well as students from McCarty's P.E. classes Monday morning.

"More than anything, the kids were in shock. At that age, they don't think about death or the dying of someone like him," Walker said.

McCarty played tight end for TCU from 2000-2004, following in the footsteps of his father, Mickey McCarty, who played baseball and football for the Horned Frogs in the 1960s.

Mickey McCarty died in 2010 after a nine-month bout with pancreatic cancer. Mickey McCarty had a stroke at the age of 35, as well as a procedure that gave him two hearts, a "piggyback" for the past 24 years of his life.

"Coach McCarty was a fantastic man and a great dad. It's devastating news for his family and for the school," Mansfield High School football coach Jeff Hulme said.

McCarty came to Timberview in 2009 from Trinity Valley Community College, where he served as an assistant football coach.

In addition to his wife, Leyla, McCarty is survived by two daughters, Jaya, 10, and Laynee, 5. Memorial services will be held at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church in Mansfield at 3 p.m. Thursday.
