DFW briefs: High school student from Azle killed in collision

AZLE -- An 18-year-old high school student who was a passenger in a car driven by his older brother was killed Thursday afternoon in a collision with a truck, police said.

Stephen Wright of Azle was pronounced dead at 1:44 p.m. in the 1800 block of Farm Road 730 North, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

Azle Police Chief Lee Blaisdell told WFAA/Channel 8 that the brothers' car turned left in front of the truck, which hit the passenger side of the car. The brother and the truck driver were taken to hospitals, the Azle police news release stated.

Their conditions were not available Thursday night. -- Marty Sabota

Police investigate boy's third-floor fall

ARLINGTON -- Police are investigating why a 3-year-old boy fell from a third-story apartment window Thursday afternoon.

Officers dispatched about 4:30 p.m. to the 900 block of East Sanford Street found the boy on the ground outside the building, Tiara Richard, a police spokeswoman, wrote in a news release.

He was flown to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth. His condition could not be learned Thursday evening.

The child's mother was in the apartment at the time, Richard said.

"Our officers are still investigating to determine the circumstances," Richard wrote. "However, there are no obvious signs of foul play." -- Marty Sabota

Pet benefit to raise money for shelter

ARLINGTON -- The Friends of Arlington Animal Services will raise money for homeless dogs and cats this Saturday at Paws in the Park.

The pet benefit is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon at River Legacy Parks' Elm Grove Pavilion, 701 NW Green Oaks Blvd.

Paws in the Park includes a 1.3-mile and a half-mile fundraising dog walk, on-site pet adoptions, children's activities, prizes, doggie cool-down pools, crafts and vendors, and low-cost cat or dog microchipping for $10. The walks begin at 9 a.m.

Proceeds will help defray medical, boarding and related costs for dogs and cats at the Arlington Animal Shelter. Registration is available online at www.faastexas.org.
