Standing at Harris Methodist Fort Worth, Aledo coach Tim Buchanan apologized to Johnathan Gray for not making a bigger deal at the time of his running back breaking the Texas schoolboy football career touchdown record.
The game was on the line, but a presentation would soon happen.
Gray was more concerned about injured teammate Willie Gibson, who according to his father Willie Sr., was diagnosed with a concussion after striking his head on the turf during Aledo's 62-35 loss to Lake Travis.
While Aledo has fallen to 1-2 for the first time since 2005, Gray scored four touchdowns against Lake Travis, giving him 148 and breaking the two-year-old mark of Cayuga's Traylon Shead.
"It's [the record] something great to have but I'm really not focusing on the record," Gray said. "I'm just trying to figure out how we can win more games and get this team ready for the long road. We have to work hard at practice and at everything we do and get in the mindset that we have to fight even harder to win games."
"It's unbelievable that a kid can score that many touchdowns in a high school career, especially a running back in today's time," Buchanan said.
Gibson still had a headache over the weekend and will be re-evaluated this week.
Serving notice
Fort Worth Arlington Heights picked up Thursday right where it left off in 2010, by blanking Fort Worth Carter-Riverside 52-0 in the Yellow Jackets' District 6-4A opener. Arlington Heights (2-0, 1-0) is looking to defend its 6-4A title after finishing undefeated last year.
Senior running back Kameron Holmes turned in a stellar performance with 146 yards and two scores on 13 carries.
"Basically it just comes down to my offensive line," said Holmes, praising a group that averages 284 pounds a player. "They came out and were blocking for me, they made all the right holes and the wide receivers helped."
Championship performer
Kennedale celebrated its 2011 Class 3A baseball state championship with a ring ceremony during halftime of Friday's 42-24 victory against Kaufman. Current football players Zac Michener (pitcher/short stop) and Austin Hunt (pitcher) each received rings for their roles as reserves.
Michener, a junior for the Wildcats, capped his night with a 30-yard touchdown catch in the second half.
"He does everything for us," Kennedale football coach Richard Barrett said. "He starts at receiver and safety, but he's also the backup quarterback, a running back, holder on extra points, the up back on punts and also punts sometimes."
Hello, win column
Arlington Seguin snapped an 0-2 start Friday by defeating Dallas Carter 34-16.
The Cougars were led by quarterback Kelton Moore (125 rushing yards, 1 TD and 81 passing yards, 2 TDs) and a stout defense. Seguin held Carter to 163 yards and forced three turnovers.
"We just executed and did things right," coach Carlos Lynn said. "We tried to limit their big plays, make them earn every yard that they got."
Bye the way
It's going to be a watered-down version of Friday night lights this week as several teams have byes.
Every team in districts 4-5A, 5-5A and 7-5A are off. Only Keller Timber Creek and Brewer are playing in 5-4A while only Everman and Cleburne are taking the field in 7-4A.
All is not lost though as all of 6-4A and every school in 6-5A except Haltom will be battling it out in district play.
