Shortly after noon today, the temperature reached 100 degrees in Dallas-Fort Worth, breaking the record for the area for most days in a year with triple-digit heat.

Tuesday was the 70th day in 2011 with temperatures of 100 degrees or higher. Monday's high of 103 made it the 69th day of the year, tying 1980.

Not long after the most-days record had been set Tuesday, the temperature was recorded at 101, breaking the record for Sept. 13 of 100 set in 1965.

At 3:15 p.m., Tuesday's high reached 107, a record high for this late in the year and 18 degrees above normal high.

Monday's high of 103 set a record high for Sept. 12, besting the 100 degrees of 1930.

At least one meteorologist is ready for a change.

"I'm tired of the heat," said Nick Hampshire, another weather service meteorologist in Fort Worth. "The later it gets into the month, the less likely we'll see this type of heat."

Though 2011 now holds the record for days with triple-digit heat, 1980 still has the mark for most consecutive 100-degree days, 42. North Texas had 40 straight going into Aug. 11, but a quick-hitting thunderstorm that day brought temporary relief as the high temperature stalled at 97, ending the second-longest streak.

The past week had lower temperatures after a high-pressure system moved out of North Texas, but it has returned. Before Monday, the last 100-degree day for North Texas was Sept. 3.

Wednesday's high is expected to reach 99, but a cold front is expected later in the week, with highs forecast for 83 on Thursday and 87 on Friday.
