College notes: Longhorn Network plans to show high school highlights

A

The Longhorn Network, a collaborative effort between the school and ESPN, is back in the middle of a discussion about plans to show high school football content.

During a Thursday news conference in Austin, a network representative acknowledged plans to show high school football highlights as part of news reports on the network, which still seeks its first carrier a week before its scheduled Aug. 26 launch.

A Big 12 spokesman said the league, which voted this month to ban live telecasts of high school games on the network, will defer to the NCAA for a rules interpretation.

The NCAA is scheduled to meet Monday to discuss the issue.

Texas scrimmage

Texas football coach Mack Brown said tonight's second scrimmage projects to be "huge" in setting the team's depth chart for its Sept. 3 opener against Rice.

Brown said Thursday that coaches have identified approximately 13 offensive players and 17 defensive players they feel comfortable listing on a two-deep list.

Although there is no established starter at quarterback, Brown indicated the field is thinning in the race among incumbent Garrett Gilbert, Case McCoy, Connor Wood and David Ash.

TCU adds coach

TCU added volunteer assistant coach Chuck Jeroloman to its baseball staff, head coach Jim Schlossnagle said.

Jeroloman was a three-year starter at Auburn before playing professionally the past seven years. He replaces Ryan Shotzberger, who is now an assistant coach at Houston for Todd Whitting. Whitting was an assistant at TCU until going to Houston in 2010. Shotzberger had been with TCU for five seasons.
