Fort Worth Star-Telegram

If I had a magic wand, I would happily fast-forward to the next season.

Most obviously, this heat must go. It's moved beyond entertaining, to ridiculous and now a little scary. When a mom is clocking the number of hours at summer camp against the number of gallons of water and gatorade that must be consumed by her child, something is amiss.

The time has also come for the season of routine, scheduling and reasonable bedtimes. I was the first mom to relish the end of school and the start of a less rigid family calendar, but now, the novelty is gone. It's time for kids to listen to adults, other than their parents. We need school stimulation, recess time and a return to 10 hours of sleep every night. You see, no matter what time my children go to bed, they are up at 7:00 am. Sleep hours are not shifted with a late bedtime, they are simply lost. Cumulatively, these lost hours add up and result in a proportionate amount of whining. Not my favorite.

Fall may not actually cool off very much, but a reduction to at least double digits would help. And while my first-grader might not admit it, he's ready for school, too.

"When's the first day, Mom? I mean, I don't really want to go, but I'm kinda ready to see everybody, everyday. And also, play kickball, of course."

Works for me. 19 days, and counting. We can only hope that that temperatures will follow.
