A 17-year-old Coppell man drowned in Lake Lewisville on Friday night, officers said.

Denton County Game Warden Stormy McCuistion said the man was swimming with other teens toward a dock near the swim area at Sneaky Pete’s when he evidently got into trouble.

"They were swimming outside of some buoys to a dock, and he fell behind the group and went under," McCuistion said. “A couple of kids went back to try to help him and a couple of folks from the bank went out to try to help him and they weren’t able to."

The victim’s name was not officially released. Channel 8 News identified him as Jha’kyric Nixon.

Lewisville Fire Department Division Chief Steve Carter said that a rescue team was already near the site when the call came in about 8 p.m.

“Sneaky Pete's swimming area is right beside Eagle Point Marina, just east of Interstate 35,” Carter said. “It was right around the corner from where we keep our boat. Witnesses were able to give the team a pretty good area and allowed us to immediately get into the water and make a quick rescue.”

McCuistion said the man was pronounced dead at about 9 p.m. after being transported to the hospital.

“The dive team found him about 8:30,” he said. “He’d been down for 20 or 30 minutes. I don’t believe they ever got him to breathe on his own.”

McCuistion said he knew little about the circumstances surrounding the drowning or what may have contributed to it.

“He didn’t hit his head or anything” he said. “They’d been out for a while, swimming and messing around. He might just have gotten tired.”
