Ho, hum. If it's Thursday, it must be 100 degrees
The temperature hit 100 degrees again Thursday, the 27th straight day of triple-digit highs, leaving Dallas-Fort Worth only two days from the record.
The chances of reaching second place -- 29 straight, set in 1998 -- might be dwindling.
But the National Weather Service in Fort Worth said North Texans shouldn't get their hopes too high.
Tropical Storm Don, which is expected to make landfall around the Texas coastal bend area late Friday, should remain south of North Texas. "The chances of it bringing significant rainfall and a break in the heat are on the lower end."
Still, the forecast calls for highs only in the upper 90s on Saturday, which would end the string at 28 days. Friday's forecast high is 101.
"It all depends on what the tropical storm does," said John Lake, a meteorologist intern with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. "It does look like it will hit along Texas, but Texas has a long coastline, so its path could change."
Lake said the weather service would send up weather balloons every six hours, rather than every 12, beginning at noon Thursday, to better gauge how the local weather will be affected.
Can we hope for rain?
"That would be nice, but it's just too far out now to really know," Lake said.
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Don is unlikely to strengthen into a hurricane.
Thursday was 2011's 34rd day of 100-degree temperatures.
The average high for July has been 101.8, according to the weather service.
