The University of Texas System Board of Regents will vote Thursday whether to approve UT Arlington leaving the Southland Conference for the Western Athletic Conference.

UTA officials could not comment because the action is pending, but the agenda for the Board meeting says that WAC commissioner Karl Benson extended an invitation to UTA on June 5, after presidents of the conference’s nine universities voted unanimously to invite UTA. Benson visited the Arlington campus June 29 to meet with university president James Spaniolo and athletic director Pete Carlon.

The invitation is not conditioned on UTA re-starting a football program, and the move would be for all sports. If approved, UTA would join the WAC on July 1, 2012.

Two Texas universities are members of the WAC: UT-San Antonio and Texas State. Other members are Denver, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Seattle University and Utah State.
