Cheers: To Sen. Wendy Davis for standing up for public education in Texas.

-- Sarah Stephens, Arlington

Jeers: To the Texas Republicans for getting their female flunkies to write almost the exact bills written by Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis so they could pass those and not Davis', especially the payday loan bill.

-- Jean Adams, Arlington

Jeers: To Sen. Wendy Davis for the legislative special session she caused. Her self-centered wealthy Dems' ego plus special interests were unable to accept decisions other than hers. More money for schools sounds good, except that Texas ranks in the bottom 40 of states. Good money after bad?

-- Trey Smith, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Ann Bastable and Patsy Sullivan for the many hours spent to present the May 15 Gospel concert at St. Luke United Methodist Church honoring the historic churches of Haltom City, sponsored by the Haltom City Public Library as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

-- Pat Davenport, Haltom City

Cheers: To Hank Harris, development supervisor, and Tariq Lea, employees at RaceTrac on North Beach Street at Northeast Loop 820, who changed a tire for two senior citizens. They took charge immediately, refused payment and even provided a cold drink! Chivalry lives!

-- David and Mary Anne Meier, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Texas Rangers broadcasting for putting a great team on TV. Tom Grieve's background and direct Rangers knowledge combined with the dulcet tones and baseball knowledge of Dave Barnett give the Rangers world-class commentary.

-- Steve Gravitt, Arlington

Cheers: To Amanda and Phillip for paying for my May 15 lunch at The Black-eyed Pea on Bryant Irvin Road.

-- Eddie Dunn, Fort Worth

Jeers: To the construction company that accepted payment in full from me and then didn't complete the job. The owner kept making promises but never returned.

-- Betsy Acker, Crowley

Cheers: To Dr. James Poettcker, general surgeon and trauma medical director at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital H-E-B. He saved my life Feb. 20, 2008, in an emergency situation. Not only is he a great physician, he is a special person to many. When time was critical, he was the best doctor for the surgery.

-- Marlana McKittrick,

Bedford

Cheers: To Janet Kibler and all the volunteers, businesses and teams who made the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Arlington a success. The program and entertainment were outstanding and it was a job well done.

-- Joan Parrish, Arlington

Jeers: To the worst American Idol show ever. One could call it the Jennifer Lopez Show. It was a venue for the rich and famous to get exposure so they could get more rich and famous. I thought it was to promote amateurs. They've lost their focus.

-- E.B. Canter, Fort Worth

Jeers: To those who think mowing at 7 a.m. on Sunday is acceptable. Sunday is the only day most people have to sleep in. I suppose we all have to go to bed early Saturday night because you have to start mowing so early.

-- Dayna M. Paul, Fort Worth

Cheers: To the couple who paid for our May 27 meal at Outback Steakhouse on Airport Freeway in Hurst. We were told that a couple who had just left paid for us. They said that Jesus told them to do it. Our heartfelt gratitude for their Christian deed.

-- LeRoy and Joyce Beene,

Hurst

Jeers: To parents who let their children chase, grab and injure the baby ducks at Green Valley Park in North Richland Hills. One with internal injuries died in my lap before we got to the Animal Emergency Hospital in Grapevine. The other will probably be euthanized.

-- Jim Mace, North Richland Hills

Cheers: To the Colleyville girls and boys variety soccer teams for winning district, and to the girls for making it to the state finals. Cheers also to their families, friends and fans.

-- Beverly Wood, Colleyville

Cheers: To America's 12 million cancer survivors who celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day. A survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. Hundreds of communities worldwide hosted events June 5 to demonstrate that life after diagnosis can be meaningful and productive.

-- Jane Oderberg, Fort Worth

Jeers: To the furniture store that would not fix or replace a big recliner chair that wouldn't go up or down with the wooden handle. Store management said no returns once the chair was out of the door. Buyers, make sure to try things out before taking something home.

-- Mary Perkins, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Dr. Teresa Godbey for always taking such good care of my wife. Recently, Marilyn had a serious medical problem and Godbey not only called her at home to check on her but also treated the problem correctly.

-- Roy G. Barnes, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Papa John's on Boat Club Road and CiCi's, Papa Murphy's, Mr. Jim's, Walmart and Pizza Hut in Saginaw for donating pizzas to the Saginaw Lions Club's annual dinner meeting honoring Special Olympians and their families.

-- Janie Fox, Saginaw

Jeers: To the postal clerk at the Melear Drive post office in Arlington who yelled not once, but twice, in a hostile tone at a woman who was trying to size up the correct flat-rate box for shipping from the display shelf. He said, "Put my display box back."

-- Sarah Cloud, Grapevine

Jeers: To the Trinity Railway Express engineers who continue to disobey the quiet zone at the Hurst Bell station. Shame on you! There are infants and children trying to sleep at 6 a.m.!

-- Keith Rutledge, Hurst

Jeers: To the high school that made an error in calculating the top 10 percent of honor graduates for the Class of 2011. Stoles, medals and certificates were given to eight students whose awards were recalled two days later. Shame on you; this is simple math!

-- Carol and Greg Dickey,

Saginaw

Cheers: To our transportation people for cracking down on baggy pants.

-- Jack O. Lewis, Haltom City

Jeers: To Fort Worth City Councilman Frank Moss for his comments in a recent news story about saggy pants on buses. I've never once seen any of these silly youngsters actually expose anything indecent; please focus on real problems, such as the city's budget crisis.

-- John Langevin, Fort Worth

Jeers: To those who wear saggy pants. I wonder if others think as I do. It reminds me of my toddlers in need of a diaper change!

-- George J. Anthony,

Fort Worth

Cheers: To the Texas House for killing the concealed-guns-on-campus bill. Jeers and a restraining jacket for the lawmakers who would enable college students to kill one another.

-- Don Ponder, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Stephanie Allmon for writing such an informative article May 30 on pet loss in the Your Life section. "When Tragedy Strikes" gave a list of resources and pet loss support groups that I will keep on hand for future use.

-- Nancy Honkomp, Arlington

Jeers: To dog owners who leave their dogs' droppings on the sidewalk. Just wanted to remind you that other people use that sidewalk after you, and we do not appreciate the new additions. Please be more considerate when walking your dog.

-- Laura Cox, Keller

Cheers: To Ms. Cornevin, Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Crowder for being awesome second-grade teachers at St. Andrew Catholic School. What a great year! The teachers, faculty and staff make our school the best.

-- Jeanette Sweany, Crowley

Jeers: To the communications company that changed the format on paying its bill. Why can't it leave something alone?

-- Mike Wilkins, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Fort Worth police officer Lea Creighton for blocking traffic when my family's car stopped running at a busy intersection. Thanks also to two other women who offered help, one of whom said her young grandchild told her to stop. Someone is raising a very thoughtful child.

-- Judy Schwartz, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Jason Wenthersby, who, on May 16, discovered that one of my dining room chairs was on fire. A piece of plastic we were using temporarily to replace a broken window served as a magnifying glass and caught the cushion on fire.

-- Linda Smith, Arlington

Cheers: To the person who sang the national anthem at the Washington Mall on Memorial Day. As a combat veteran and retired soldier, I am deeply offended when someone alters the tune to our national anthem, which sometimes happens at sporting events.

-- Nat Fralia, Fort Worth

Cheers: To the men of Hallmark Baptist Church on Risinger Road for mowing the grass along the sidewalk outside the neighborhood across the street from their church as they want to keep the neighborhood looking nice. Thank you, Hallmark angels!

-- Sandy Coombes, Fort Worth

Jeers: To the woman who keeps taking my signs. It's hard enough in this economy to sell a house without someone taking my open house signs. Police have warned her, but she doesn't seem to care about the law. Guess I need a new sign: Lawyer Wanted.

-- Laura Wieland, Lakeside

Jeers: To the U.S. senators from Texas who voted to repeal Medicare as we know it and throw us to the mercies of the profit-making health insurance industry. But of course they will never have the need for Medicare like me and others already using its benefits.

-- Rita Eason, Grand Prairie

Cheers: To Bistro Louise. When told that Louise would close the Bistro, our 9-year-old grandson said, "Oh no! What are we going to do now?" Our feeling exactly! Louise's Bistro performance was fabulous; we can't wait for the encore!

-- Rushie and David Simpson, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Katie Allen at Frost Bank on Bryant Irvin Road for the patience and knowledge to straighten out a 3-month-old problem I had with moving my Social Security from another bank. We need more employees like Katie.

-- Helen Mefford, Fort Worth

Jeers: To school districts that chose Memorial Day to make up for a snow day. Why not just add days at the end of the year? What an unpatriotic message to send to the students. I guess the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform mean little.

-- Charlie Barnes, Arlington

Jeers: To the plumbing company that dug up my yard, then shoved everything back in, including solvent cans, water bottles and rubber gloves, but not the old sewer concrete. Employees did not communicate, were late, broke promises and created a mess of my yard. I get to spend the summer picking up old concrete.

-- Emilie Butz, Fort Worth

Cheers: To John Clark, skillful Arlington family law attorney, whose professionalism and ethics are unparalleled. John advocates in the best and practical interest of his client, with compassion, and keeps his charges fair for his services.

-- Alex Christian, Grapevine

Cheers: To Principal Nick Torres and former Principal Antonio Martinez, along with the rest of the administration and faculty staff at George C. Clarke Elementary for helping mold Veronica into a smart, ambitious child. Cheers also to the superb after-school program through Clayton After-School.

-- RJ Reed, Fort Worth

Jeers: To Bud Kennedy's June 5 column that declared "New tax assessor-collector isn't worthy of the office." The reason, per Kennedy, is that the appointee is not a minority or female. Kennedy is an embarrassment to your newspaper.

-- Tom Kolter, Trophy Club

Jeers: To the person(s) who left a dog in their Lincoln while eating in a restaurant on one of the hottest days so far this year. I'm sure if you were your pet, you wouldn't want to be inside the car and not have it running. Don't do it again.

-- Donald Kern, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Tom's Mechanical Heating/Cooling for providing excellent service! Their compassionate, service manager Mary gave priority to my mother's need for service when her AC unit quit working on a very hot day. Daryl, their AC expert, arrived and minutes later, the AC was cooling wonderfully. Great job!

-- Carol Giles, Fort Worth

Jeers: To the driver of the red truck in Cleburne who ran over our dog. I can understand if it was an accident, but witnesses believe that you hit him on purpose. If so, you have no soul. It was Teddy's first and last time to escape. We are devastated.

-- Holly Herr, Arlington
