ROUND ROCK -- Wichita Falls Rider scored six runs early and held on to beat Corpus Christi Calallen 6-2 to win the Class 4A state baseball title.
Rider (39-7) lost in the semifinals in 2010, but the Raiders' 2011 title run included a semifinal win over defending champion Brenham and Friday's win over 2010 runner-up Calallen (39-6). Ben Smith (12-2) and tournament MVP Cameron Allen combined for the win.
Class 5A
Lub. Coronado 10, CC Carroll 0 (5): Blake Bass drove in six runs as Lubbock Coronado shocked defending Class 5A champion Corpus Christi Carroll in five innings in the 5A semifinals. Bass had bases-loaded doubles in the first and fifth innings to ignite the Mustangs (33-15) offense.
Clute Brazoswood 4, Klein 3: William Easter hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to carry Clute Brazoswood past Klein. Brandon Berger improved to 16-0 with a complete game, striking out 10 while scattering seven hits.
Brazoswood (33-8), which won titles in 1984 and 1992, will go for its third state championship at noon today (FSSW) against Coronado (33-15).
