A development group led by former Texas Rangers slugger Rafael Palmeiro has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy court protection in Fort Worth.

Gardens of Grapevine Development had planned the World Villages of Grapevine project on 162 acres northeast of Grapevine Mills mall.

The project, proposed in 2007 before the economic meltdown, was to include hotels, a 20-acre Asian-themed garden, a river walk, towering waterfalls, shops and offices.

Palmeiro, who lives in Colleyville, had earlier undertaken the Reserve at Colleyville luxury home development. That 92-acre development, off Murphy Road east of Precinct Line Road, was sold to Toll Brothers last year.

Palmeiro is listed as manager of the Gardens of Grapevine Development partnership.
