Bug off

While there are many things I love about summer, bug spray is not one of them. I loathe the heady cloud of fake-woodsy scent that is ubiquitous in the evening hours. Plus, the thought of coating my daughter's skin with all those chemicals also makes me uneasy. But then I'm not a big fan of bug bites either. So what's a mom to do?

California Baby has the answer. Unlike many other DEET-free insect repellants, this stuff actually works. It's a blend of citronella, lemongrass and cedar that repels fleas, mosquitoes, ticks and biting flies. The scent is pleasant and not at all overpowering.

A few caveats: You do need to apply the bug spray liberally and often. And if you're heading out to hike in the deep woods, you might need to break out the DEET instead. But for pool time and barbecues, California Baby has you covered.

Order it online, or pick some up at Target (I found it in the baby care section).
