Review: 'The Wizard of Oz'

04/30/11 12:42
Fort Worth Star-Telegram

What it is: In this re-telling of a beloved classic, Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto arrive with a bang in the land of Oz. Accompanied by the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow, she makes the trek to see the Wizard in hopes of finding her way home. The cast of characters features spectacular performances from the whole crew, but especially from the scene-stealing Cowardly Lion and the pint-sized Glinda.

What kids will like: My little one be-bopped in her seat to rousing renditions of "Follow the Yellow Brick Road" and "We're Off To See the Wizard." She was also mesmerized by the colorful costumes and pageantry during the Munchkins' numbers.

What parents will like: The production hits high notes for its special effects (shimmering lights reflecting off the domed ceiling and booming thunder). All of the actors have strong singing voices and belt out the numbers.

Casa Manana knows how to cater to families with young kids. If your child is fussy, you can step out to the lobby and catch the show on video monitors. Snacks and drinks are also reasonably priced. Plus, at around 1 1/2 hours, the evening production is timed just right so you're home before the witching hour.

Good to know: The scary sound effects and cackling machinations of the Wicked West of the West may may be a bit much for kids under age 4.
