Q&A: Star James, owner of PLUMP Baby Wear
In 2009, Star James was on the hunt for a one-of-a-kind onesie for a friends newborn. What she found was a plethora of pastels pinks, blues, yellows, greens that were uninspired. Sound familiar, moms? So, Star made it her mission to create quality baby clothes in vibrant colors. The Oak Cliff native launched PLUMP Baby Wear in January 2010 and by the end of that year gave birth to the lines latest inspiration her son Bradie IV, the namesake of husband and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Bradie James. Star took some time from her busy schedule to chat with mom2mom about how she became a mompreneur, balancing work and family life, and who inspires her.
Why did you start your business?
I developed PLUMP Baby Wear to try to create a colorful collection of quality onesies that would stand out in a market that was limited to pastel colors and patterns for infant wear. I wanted something simple, yet unique... something fresh and modern It's just fun.
How do you juggle family and work life?
Balance is very important in the James' household. My family is definitely my first priority, and with my son just turning 3 months old, he is running the house. So, right now, everything comes second to him. But, honestly, without help I wouldn't be able to do it. I am able to delegate a lot of my work duties to my Operations Manager with PLUMP and that keeps the wheels spinning on that end. At home, me and my husband are very close and do almost everything together, so we are pretty much a tag team.
What life lesson would you like to pass on to Bradie IV?
One that stands out in my mind would be to keep God first in your life and the rest will fall into place through hard work and dedication.
What advice would you give to new moms?
Get your newborn on a schedule early, so that you can have dedicated mommy and daddy time. Date night is key in the James' house.
Who is your role model?
I am going to have to say that I have more than one. My mom, one of the most positive and beautiful women inside and out I know, and my husband the most generous, spiritually grounded, encouraging, motivated and motivating person I know. I would like to be like the both of them when I grow up.
