Daylight vs. Sleep

This is, and always has been, my favorite time of year. Late Springtime means sun, warm weather, festivals and longer daytime light.

Now that I have two small children, this lovely, longer daytime light is causing me some problems. How can I explain that "Yes, it is still a blue sky, but it's time for bed and you should be tired." Or "I know, it's still light enough to do chalk drawings in the driveway, but we should actually have already finished bathtime by now."

I understand their "Aw, Mom!" reaction to the daily announcement that it's time to get ready for bed. IT doesn't feel right to me, either. It would truly be easier and more fun for mom and dad if it WAS okay to just keep playing Candyland or hitting baseballs.

School is still in session, and, even if it wasn't, my kids still rise and shine at 7 am, so what's a mom to do? Going to sleep at 9:30 doesn't cut it.

So, I'll keep at it. Any brilliant suggestions about a new way to explain this subject are heartily welcomed...
