High school administrators always like it when their libraries are abuzz with young people. They can even tolerate the noise level getting a little high.

But on the first Wednesday of February, area libraries were filled with student athletes making their futures official.

Between Carroll, Colleyville Heritage, Grapevine, Keller, Keller Central, Keller Fossil Ridge and Justin Northwest, 74 hopefuls signed their national letters of intent.

For them, the phrase of "oral commitments are non-binding" no longer applies. They ranged from football to track and field, golf, cross country, volleyball and boys and girls soccer.

Carroll led the way with 23 athletes, including 14 on football.

The latest addition to the Carroll football signings was defensive end Ben Perry, who committed to and signed with Minnesota. Perry did not commit until the final week of January.

Of the Carroll football signings, eight were with Division I programs, including Perry, defensive back Kacy Rogers (Miami), quarterback David Piland (Houston) and offensive lineman Jackson Richards (Texas Tech), running back Tommy Avers (Air Force), offensive lineman Mason Hathaway (Colorado State), linebacker Mitchell Osborne (Tulsa) and place-kicker Cade Foster (Alabama). However, Foster had already enrolled in Alabama in January.
