FORT WORTH — A Fort Worth motorist remained in a local hospital Tuesday, accused of driving drunk when he crashed his car head-on with another vehicle during the weekend, killing an official with the Northwest Tarrant Chamber of Commerce.

Fort Worth police reports identified the driver as Jeffery Drew Lamar, 34, of Fort Worth. He is expected to be hospitalized for several days, said Fort Worth police Sgt. Pedro Criado on Tuesday.

Lamar had been under police guard since the Saturday night wreck, but there are no officers at the hospital now, Criado said.

Fort Worth police plan to get an arrest warrant on a charge of intoxication manslaughter for Lamar in the next few days, Criado said.

Larry Thompson, 63, the executive director of the Northwest Tarrant Chamber of Commerce, died at the scene Saturday night, according Fort Worth police reports and the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.

The wreck happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. Saturday in the 6900 block of Robertson Road.

According to Fort Worth police reports, Lamar was driving his car eastbound on Robertson Road and Thompson was westbound on the same street.

A motorist who was driving behind Lamar’s car told police that Lamar’s vehicle was traveling down the road when it quickly swerved to the westbound lane and hit Thompson’s car head-on.

Thompson had just appeared earlier that night in the play Leading Ladies with the Azle Arts Association’s Popcorn Players.

Before joining the chamber, Thompson had worked in hospital administration for 35 years. He was president of Texas Health Azle hospital for 12 years and also worked for Texas Health Fort Worth hospital.
