Chance of snow increases on Thursday, forecasters say
The band of steady rain that dumped nearly an inch of rain on the Metroplex Monday morning, has moved out and will be replaced by much colder temperatures.
It's those temperatures and the influx of moisture that have National Weather Service forecasters saying that there is a good possibility of snow on Thursday.
And while we may see some sunshine on Tuesday and Wednesday, North Texas residents could be greeted by either sleet or snow Thursday morning, Hampshire added.
“It’s going to be a really fine line between rain and snow on Thursday,” Hampshire said. “So far it appears it’s going to be just cool enough for some snow.”
The forecasters say that the best chance of snow on Thursday will be north of a line from Killeen to Waco to Athens. The weather service said that service temperatures will likely be at or slightly above freezing when the snow begins falling, causing it to initially melt.
Heavier accumulations are possible, however, as the bands of snow develop, the weather service said.
As much as 1 to 3 inches of snow are possible on Thursday, but the weather service warned that uncertainly over the exact track and speed of the incoming system would affect how much frozen precipitation falls.
Lows for the rest of the week are expected to hover below 32 degrees while the highs will struggle to reach the upper 40s, said Nick Hampshire a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.
Hampshire said that temperatures would drop significantly around midnight Monday as the cold front arrives.
