The Grapevine girls basketball team had a strong showing last week, going 2-0 and improving to 7-3 in the District 5-5A standings.

Grapevine played Keller on Tuesday after the paper's print deadline (visit www.grapevinecourier.com for results) and next travels to Fossil Ridge at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

"The Fossil game is going to be huge," Lady Mustangs coach Steve Ganninger said. "If we are fortunate enough to beat Keller on Tuesday, then Fossil is going to have to beat us to give themselves a chance at third place.

"There is going to be a lot riding on that game, I believe, and it's going to be tough."

Grapevine defeated Northwest 57-34 on Jan. 26, then beat L.D. Bell 62-25 on Friday. Ganninger said the wins were very good efforts all the way around from his team.

"We did a lot of really good things in both games," Ganninger said. "We are really starting to come together after Lauren Leet and Courtney Lewis had to leave the starting line-up.

"We're starting to get our rotations going, and we really played well together [last week] and played really good defense. We worked well together on offense, so I think we made some good strides [last week] as far as getting chemistry going."

Ganninger said he is still not completely sure when he will get his two starters back, either.

"For Courtney, it looks like it is going to be close as far as whether she can get back for that last game against Trinity," Ganninger said. "I told her that if we are lucky enough to make it to the playoffs, I would really like to have her back for that. It is still kind of up in the air as far as that goes.

"With Lauren, she still has some pain in her ankle, so we are not real sure when she might be back."

Ganninger said he has been pleased with the way his team has responded since losing to Colleyville Heritage 62-35 on Jan. 22 and being without Leet and Lewis.

"I have been really impressed, especially after the way we played against Colleyville," Ganninger said. "We didn't play well at all. We came back, and had two really good practices before Northwest, and I think that they are really understanding that, for us to be successful, we really have to play together and share the ball and play good team defense."
