The Northwest boys soccer team lost a tough one to Colleyville Heritage on Saturday that coach Chad Rakestraw said seemed doomed from the outset.

Northwest took on L.D. Bell Monday night, and will square off with Keller at 7:15 p.m. on Friday at Northwest ISD Stadium.

"Keller is going to be a very solid side," Rakestraw said. "They are a very talented team. They are well-coached and organized, so it's going to be a tough game, but if our kids show up the way they did against Grapevine, I think we can hang with them."

Rakestraw said the 1-0 loss to Colleyville Heritage was disappointing all the way around.

"It was just unfortunate," he said. "It looked like we were mentally unprepared. We had 10 kids show up late to the school to leave, so we started the game with eight players on the field.

"We played about five minutes like, and then started adding guys in. It kind of threw us off a little bit, but I thought it was important to teach the kids a lesson with that. We just didn't show up to play. It wasn't a good showing at all."

Northwest opened district with a 2-0 victory against Grapevine Jan. 26, and Rakestraw said it was a very strong effort for his team.

"The kids played incredibly well," he said. "They stuck to the game plan. Their individual effort was awesome, and our forwards came through for us. Gio Vasquez had two assists in that game, and Jose Muro, our other forward, got the other two goals. They were really working well up top together."

On the girls side, Northwest lost to Colleyville Heritage 2-0 on Saturday, and coach Lincoln Hunt said his team needs to play better early on in its games.

"If we can get over starting slow, we're going to be in good shape," he said. "We've started slow the last couple of games, and it has really cost us. We ended up giving up two goals in the first 10 minutes against Colleyville, and that was all of the scoring there was.

"We gave up three goals in the first 15 or 20 minutes against Grapevine [Jan. 26]. We play well with everybody, but if we keep having these slow starts, we will have problems."

Northwest plays Keller at 7:15 p.m. on Feb. 5 at Keller ISD Stadium, and Hunt said he expects a good challenge.

"Keller is going to play a solid game," he said. "They are going to be organized and they are going to be ready to break into the win column. They've had a couple of rough games to start off.

"They'll be looking to get on the right side of things, just as we will. It should be a good game."
