Alex Rodriguez’s 500th home run ball, as of now, is worth more than a Babe Ruth autographed ball.

SCP Auctions is running an auction through Feb. 4 with various memorabilia, including Rodriguez’s 500th home run ball and a signed Ruth ball. On Wednesday, the Rodriguez ball had a bid of $25,000 on it, while Ruth’s had a bid of $17,717.

"The A-Rod ball is more of a unique item because there are so many signed baseballs by Babe Ruth out there," said Dan Imler, managing director of SCP Auctions. "There’s only one A-Rod 500 home run ball. But those two are really hard to equate in terms of price because they are a little different memorabilia categories."

Imler said Rodriguez’s ball should be the highest auctioned item, even though it was the third-highest bid Wednesday behind a 1996 NBA autographed picture featuring the 50 greatest players and a bat used by pitching great Walter Johnson back in the 1920s.

The price for the A-Rod ball is anybody’s guess. Imler said Eddie Murray’s 500th home run ball went for about $400,000, while Mickey Mantle’s went for around $200,000.

"It’s all over the place, but this is a significant milestone," Imler said. "It’ll be more significant in time, especially if he ultimately has the home run record that [Barry] Bonds currently holds."

Among the other items up for auction is a ball used in Nolan Ryan’s seventh no-hitter. Ryan, who shut down the Toronto Blue Jays on May 1, 1991 for his final no-hitter, signed the ball and included "#7" above his signature.

The ball, which had a bid of $1,210 as of Wednesday, came from second base umpire John Shulock, who kept the ball as a keepsake.
